There is nothing particularly cinematic in its conception. Miss Borden's montages feel like isolated, still images of women in various walks of life rather than closely woven variations on particular themes, and her characters' rhetoric can be windy in the extreme.[1]
The viewer is perhaps more aware of the depth of Olive's passion for the young woman than Olive is herself [...][2]
It's the rare Hollywood adventure film that brings mythic images of tragedy – the fall of Icarus, the ruin of Ozymandias – so easily to mind.[3]
There's Something About Mary may be many things, but dull and routine aren't among them.[4]
Chuck Palahniuk's new novel, "Rant," takes its title from the noise made by children as they retch and vomit. The beautiful anatomical drawing on the book’s cover depicts a heart, since a cow's heart appears in the novel as something used to make kids throw up. Details like these add up to an automatic deal breaker for anyone who has been tantalized from afar by Mr. Palahniuk's visceral fiction and wondered if "Rant" was the place to start.
But Mr. Palahniuk doesn't write for tourists. He writes for hard-core devotees drawn to the wild, angry imagination on display and to the taboo-busting humor at which he usually excels. The very outrageousness of "Rant" is supposedly part of its appeal.
