• Le parole sono strumenti delicati: come usarle perché, dopo aver letto la poesia, il sapore che resta non sia quello delle parole stesse, ma quello di un pensiero, di una situazione, di una realtà parallela? Se non usate in modo appropriato, le parole, in poesia, sono come i brutti avanzi di cibo dopo aver mangiato. Ciò che voglio dire è che i lettori rigetteranno le parole se non servono a spostare l'attenzione da sé stesse ad un'altra dimensione.

Words are delicate instruments: How to use them so that, after having read the poem, the taste remaining is not of the words themselves, but of a thought, a situation, a parallel reality? If not used appropriately, words in poetry are like the ugly remains of food after eating. What I mean is that readers will reject words if they don't serve to shift attention from themselves to somewhere else.

• [...] scrivere è stato ciò che ha protetto la bambina dentro di me, che mi ha aiutato ad affrontare le mie paure, i dispiaceri, il dolore, le ferite. Scrivere è stato lo strumento con cui ho scoperto la bellezza e il senso in mezzo alla miseria. Così la poesia ha protetto me da me stessa.
  D'altra parte, se l'obiettivo della conoscenza ci dà una ragione di esistere, le esperienze amare ci aiutano a conoscere il mondo intorno a noi, a comprenderlo ad un livello più profondo. Da questo punto di vista, una vita senza scosse, facile può essere una specie di innocente ignoranza.

[...] writing was the thing that protected the child inside me, helped me deal with my fears, displeasure, pain, wounds. Writing was the instrument by which I discovered the beauty and meaning in the midst of misery. So poetry protected me from myself.
On the other hand, if the pursuit of knowledge gives us a reason to exist, bitter experiences help us to know the world around us, to understand it on a deeper level. In that way, a smooth, easy life can be a kind of innocent ignorance.
