• All'epoca in cui è stato realizzato The Chaser, il genere thriller era praticamente evitato nel cinema coreano ed era apprezzato solo da un piccolo mercato di nicchia. Ma, quando lessi la sceneggiatura, amai davvero la storia e il dialogo e le frasi utilizzate, erano molto diverse dalla norma; la narrazione e lo sviluppo del personaggio era per me molto particolare. Quando Na Hong-jin girò The Yellow Sea, mi fidavo molto di lui come regista e la trama del film fu estremamente allettante per me.

At the time ‘The Chaser’ was made, the thriller genre was pretty much avoided in Korean cinema and was liked really only by a small niche market. However, when I read the script, I really loved the story and the dialogue and sentences used within it were very different from the norm; the narrative and character development was to my mind very distinct. By the point when Na Hong-jin was making "The Yellow Sea", I'd come to trust him deeply as a director and the film's storyline was extremely attractive to me

• Il cinema coreano in realtà ha una grande quantità di commedie molto divertenti e penso che dovrebbero essere rese più internazionali. Alcuni film come Day and Night di Hong Sang-soo sono veramente divertenti, ma il fascino dei film commedia si basa sul dialogo, sul linguaggio e sull'umorismo che a volte può essere perso quando viene tradotto. Al contrario, i thriller estremi sono più fisici e di conseguenza i problemi con le traduzioni diminuiscono.

Korean cinema actually has a great deal of very funny comedies and I feel that these should be made more international. Some films such as Hong Sang-soo's "Day and Night" are genuinely funny but the appeal of comedy films is based on the dialogue and language and the humour within that can sometimes be lost when it's translated. Conversely, hardcore thrillers are felt quite physically by the body and the problems with translations are diminished as a result.

Sento che questo dovrebbe essere un messaggio, che non dovremmo dimenticare il potere che abbiamo come cittadini di rovesciare tutto ciò che è ingiusto, tutto ciò che è opprimente e di raggiungere davvero la libertà che gli esseri umani meritano. Questo è davvero il messaggio del 1987.

[...] this June Democracy Movement, when we look back on it, it really is a miraculous movement in that we had achieved direct elections, but we have forgotten about that in the course of thirty years, or so. And when you think about it, we're the only country that has achieved direct elections in such a short amount of time. I think the trigger of this whole movement, it wasn't just a small section of people in the country; it was everyone in society. From religious organisations, to marketplace people, students; it was actually a very titular, defining historical moment, I believe. I feel like this should be a message, that we shouldn't forget the power that we have as citizens to overthrow anything that is unjust, anything that is oppressive, and to really achieve freedom that human beings deserve. That is really what the message is of 1987.
