People sometimes scoff at soaps but it’s not easy. There are so many lines to learn every day and you need to know them because there’s no time to mess around in TV. You have to shoot it and get on with it, rather than trying out different things. You have to knuckle down to get the best work but when you do, people respond to it.

Every season, I got to do scenes that every actor dreams of and work with such fantastic people. He was a horrible little bastard but I feel privileged to have been part of such a great show.

• Quando guardi i bambini che giocano vedi che sono così immersi nel loro mondo perché ci credono, la loro immaginazione è così profonda. La mamma dice che "il mangiare è pronto" e loro sono completamente fuori da tutto, poi finiscono il cibo e ricominciano subito. Immagino che sia quello che cerco di fare come attore, ritrovare questo, la verità. Essenzialmente recitare significa raccontare la verità sulle vicende che sia un'opera teatrale o film, che sono esattamente la medesima cosa, ed è un gran bel lavoro. Fondamentalmente è essere un bambino quando sei un adulto.

When you look at kids playing they’re so immersed in that world because they believe in it, their imaginations are so in it. Mum says ‘food’s ready’ and they’re completely out of it and then they finish food, and they’re straight back into it. I guess that’s what I try to do as an actor, to regain that, the truth of it. Essentially acting is about telling the truth of the circumstances of whatever play or film it is, so it’s exactly the same, and it’s a lovely job when you get to do that, it’s basically like being a kid when you’re a grown-up.
