:Change only the name of the analogous country and it becomes fairly clear that in Iraq we are fighting not the Vietcong, but the Khmer Rouge, as the Vietcong eventually had to do on our behalf.
:Great place, Zaire. It's as large as the United States east of the Mississippi, and it's the second-largest French-speaking country in the world. It has colossal resources, built as it is on vast reefs of copper, cobalt, and diamonds, to say nothing of its immense river network and its wealth of game and arable land. It has been the recipient of tremendous generosity from every kind of lending institution. It could have broken out of the "Third World" a generation ago. But instead it became a demonstration case of the deliberate uses of underdevelopment – something neither Waugh nor Conrad bothered even to imagine.

:Here is a society where rape is not a crime. It is a punishment. Women can be sentenced to be raped, by tribal and religious kangaroo courts, if even a rumor of their immodesty brings shame on their menfolk. In such an obscenely distorted context, the counterpart term to shame – which is the noble word "honor" – becomes most commonly associated with the word "killing." Moral courage consists of the willingness to butcher your own daughter.
:Having survived Mussolini's depredations, the attempt by British colonialism to partition them along tribal lines, and three decades of bloody Ethiopian occupation and repression, the Eritreans have done a remarkable thing. They have gotten rid of outside tutelage, while retaining the best of Italy (the food and the espresso, though even an ardent fan cannot praise the wine, which tastes like sheep-dip), the best of England (pedestrian traffic in Asmara is directed by modest but efficient Girl Scouts wearing white ankle socks), and most of the useful contacts with Ethiopia.
:They gave us no peace and we shouldn't give them any. We can't live on the same planet as them and I'm glad because I don't want to. I don't want to breathe the same air as these psychopaths and murders and rapists and torturers and child abusers. Its them or me. I'm very happy about this because I know it will be them. It's a duty and a responsibility to defeat them. But it's also a pleasure. I don't regard it as a grim task at all.
:Beware the irrational, however seductive. Shun the '"transcendent'" and all who invite you to subordinate or annihilate yourself. Distrust compassion; prefer dignity for yourself and others. Don't be afraid to be thought arrogant or selfish. Picture all experts as if they were mammals. Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity. Seek out argument and disputation for their own sake; the grave will supply plenty of time for silence. Suspect your own motives, and all excuses. Do not live for others any more than you would expect others to live for you.

Riga 37:
:The two big tests for Eritrean society will be, and already are, the overcoming of tribal and religious fissures, and the emancipation of women. Both tasks are made easier by the nature of the war Eritrea fought, a people's war which involved both sexes, fighting together. Although the country is divided into nine ethnic groups and three main religions, the solidarity that has emerged from this is more than rhetorical.
:How do I dislike President George Bush? Let me count the ways. Most of them have to do with his contented assumption that 'faith' is, in and of itself, a virtue. This self-satisfied mentality helps explain almost everything, from the smug expression on his face to the way in which, as governor of Texas, he signed all those death warrants without losing a second's composure. It explains the way in which he embraced ex-KGB goon Vladimir Putin, citing as the basis of a beautiful relationship the fact that Putin was wearing a crucifix. (Has Putin been seen wearing that crucifix before or since? Did his advisers tell him that the President of the United States was that easy a pushover?) It also explains the unforgivable intervention that Bush made into the private life of the Schiavo family: leaving his Texas ranch to try and keep '"alive'" a woman whose autopsy showed that her brain had melted to below flatline a long time before. Here is a man who believes the '"jury'" is still '"out'" on whether we evolved as a species, who regards stem cell research as something profane, who affects the odd belief that Islam is '"a religion of peace'". However that may be, I always agreed with him on one secular question, that the regime of Saddam Hussein was long overdue for removal.
:The American-sponsored regimes in Vietnam tended, among other things, to be strongly identified with one confessional minority (Catholic) to the exclusion of secular, nationalist and Buddhist forces. The elected government in Iraq may have a sectarian hue, but at least it draws upon hitherto repressed majority populations - Kurds and Shias - and at least the American embassy works as a solvent upon religious and ethnic divisions rather than an inciter of them.
