*I [[Khmer Rossi]] non volevano essere semplicemente dei comunisti; volevano essere estremisti. La loro filosofia era un misto di nazismo e di rivoluzionarismo culturale cinese. Volevano che la Cambogia avesse un nome nella storia, renderla ancora più potente di quanto fosse nel periodo di Angkor, tra il nono e dodicesimo secolo, quando l'antico regno di Cambogia dominava tutta questa parte del mondo. Dicevano inoltre che per avere una nazione grande, tutti dovevano essere impavidi, come il popolo di Sparta nella Grecia antica. Avevano buone ragioni per pensare di riuscire. Il loro ragionamento era questo: siccome abbiamo sconfitto gli americani e siamo riusciti a avere il miglior esercito del mondo, perché dovremmo fallire nei nostri tentativi di rendere il resto della nazione puro, impavido e esperto come il nostro esercito?

Così, per creare una nuova società, hanno dovuto distruggere la nostra civiltà e le nostre tradizioni. Cercarono anche di annientare il Buddismo, poiché il Buddismo dice, «Vi prego, siate tolleranti; vi prego, non fate la guerra; fate la pace.» Il Buddismo era adatto a creare guerrieri forti.
