In certi paesi comunisti, li hanno messi in campi di concentramento per rieducarli, ma i comunisti in Cambogia dissero, «No, questa gente non può essere rieducata. Non possiamo cambiarle le idee o i cuori; devono essere sterminati.»
:''Like Stalin when he was in the Kremlin, the Khmer Rouge saw enemies everywhere. The intellectuals who were not like them were intellectually corrupt and had to be killed. The princes had to be killed, they said, because they were oppressors of the people. I did not oppress my people. I built for them schools, universities, hospitals. They had no reason to hate the monarchy. But those Communist Cambodians knew that in order to take power, they must kill the princes and all the royalist leaders. Quindi, se si può cambiare una tigre in un gatto, si può cambiare un gatto in una tigre, e c'erano cambogiani pronti ad essere tigri. Fra le tribù del pacifico meridionale, la Malesia e l'Indonesia, c'è un fenomeno detto amok. Ogni tanto, il popolo viene posseduto dall'amok, e diventa violento e crudele.
