(EN) Its proximity to Africa is one of the principal reasons for the wealth and variety of the Doñana's birdlife. Birds with large wingspans, such as the eagles and kites that abound here, cannot fly across water for long distances because they require thermal updrafts for the long glides that allow them to rest their wings during migrations. Hence they cross the Mediterranean at the three points — the Dardanelles, Gibraltar, and Tarifa — where the intervening straits are at their narrowest. For those making the journey from West Africa, the marismas of Doñana are a logical, indeed essential, resting place and hunting ground.		(IT) La sua vicinanza all'Africa è una delle cause principali della ricchezza e varietà di specie di uccelli. Gli uccelli con una grande apertura alare, come le aquile e i nibbi, non riescono a volare sull'acqua per lunghe distanze dal momento che necessitano di correnti termali ascensionali per le lunghe planate che vengono utilizzate durante le migrazioni. Per questo motivo attraversano il Mediterraneo in tre punti (i Dardanelli, Gibilterra e Tarifa) dove i continenti sono più vicini. In previsione del viaggio verso l'Africa occidentale, i marismas di Doñana sono un posto comodo ed essenziale per riposarsi e cacciare.
