• Da bambina sognavo di diventare una scrittrice. Il mio passatempo più eccitante era leggere romanzi; in effetti, leggerei qualsiasi cosa potessi trovare. Non avrei mai pensato che avrei studiato matematica prima del mio ultimo anno di liceo. Sono cresciuta in una famiglia con tre fratelli. I miei genitori sono stati sempre molto solidali e incoraggianti. Per loro era importante che avessimo professioni significative e soddisfacenti, ma a loro non importava tanto del successo e dei risultati. Per molti versi, è stato un ottimo ambiente per me, sebbene questi siano stati tempi duri durante la guerra Iran-Iraq. Mio fratello maggiore è stata la persona che mi ha fatto interessare alla scienza in generale. Mi raccontava quello che aveva imparato a scuola. Il mio primo ricordo di matematica è probabilmente la volta in cui mi ha parlato del problema dell'aggiunta di numeri da 1 a 100. Penso che avesse letto su un popolare giornale di scienze come Gauss risolse questo problema. La soluzione è stata piuttosto affascinante per me. Quella è stata la prima volta che ho apprezzato una bella soluzione, anche se non sono riuscita a trovarla da solo.

As a kid, I dreamt of becoming a writer. My most exciting pastime was reading novels; in fact, I would read anything I could find. I never thought I would pursue mathematics before my last year in high school. I grew up in a family with three siblings. My parents were always very supportive and encouraging. It was important for them that we have meaningful and satisfying professions, but they didn’t care as much about success and achievement. In many ways, it was a great environment for me, though these were hard times during the Iran-Iraq war. My older brother was the person who got me interested in science in general. He used to tell me what he learned in school. My first memory of mathematics is probably the time that he told me about the problem of adding numbers from 1 to 100. I think he had read in a popular science journal how Gauss solved this problem. The solution was quite fascinating for me. That was the first time I enjoyed a beautiful solution, though I couldn’t find it myself.

• Senza entusiasmo la matematica può sembrare una materia inutile e fredda. La bellezza della matematica si mostra solo ai più pazienti.

I can see that without being excited mathematics can look pointless and cold. The beauty of mathematics only shows itself to more patient followers.
