L'ABC del comunismo, libro di Nikolaj Ivanovič Bucharin e Yevgeni Preobrazhensky del 1919.

Incipit

Ogni partito persegue determinati obiettivi, sia che si tratti di un partito di latifondisti o capitalisti, sia che che si tratti di un partito di operai o contadini. Ogni partito deve avere obiettivi precisi, altrimenti esso perde il carattere di partito.

Every party pursues definite aims, whether it be a party of landowners or capitalists, on the one hand, or a party of workers or peasants, on the other. Every party must have definite aims, for otherwise it is not a party.

• Un tempo si usava dire: "Ciò che è salutare per un russo, è morte per un tedesco". Ma in realtà, sarebbe più accurato dire: "Ciò che è salutare per un lavoratore, è morte per un latifondista o un capitalista".

People used to say: "What is wholesome for a Russian is a death to a German." It would, in fact, be more accurate to say: "What is wholesome for a worker is death to a landowner or capitalist." (Introduction, §1, p. 19)

• La rivoluzione comunista può essere vittoriosa solo come rivoluzione mondiale.

The communist revolution can be victorious only as a world revolution (Ch. 5, §35 , p. 138)

• L'esercito proletario deve essere composto esclusivamente da persone appartenenti alla classe lavoratrice, da persone che non sfruttano il lavoro e che sono direttamente interessate alla vittoria della rivoluzione operaia.

The proletarian army must be exclusively composed of persons belonging to the working class, of persons who do not exploit labour and who are directly interested in the victory of the workers' revolution. (Ch. 8, §66, p. 209).

• Certi comunisti mediocri ragionano così: "La religione non mi impedisce d'essere comunista, io credo sia in Dio che nel comunismo. La mia fede in Dio non m'impedisce di lottare per la causa della rivoluzione proletaria". Un tale ragionamento è completamente sbagliato. La religione ed il comunismo sono incompatibili sia teoricamente che praticamente. (parte seconda, capitolo XI, La religione ed il comunismo, 89. Perché religione e comunismo sono incompatibili)

Many weak-kneed communists reason as follows: "Religion does not prevent my being a communist. I believe both in God and in communism. My faith in God does not hinder me from fighting for the cause of the proletarian revolution."
This train of thought is radically false. Religion and communism are incompatible, both theorethically and practically. (p. 247)

• Il nostro fine ultimo è realizzare una società tale da garantire un sostegno assicurato a tutte le persone che per una ragione o per un'altra hanno perso l'abilità di lavorare, a tutti coloro che non sono in grado di lavorare. Dobbiamo fare in modo che gli anziani possano godere di una vecchiaia serena, in cui siano provvisti di tutte le comodità della vita; che i bambini abbiano tutto ciò che è adatto alle loro esigenze; che gli invalidi e i mutilati possano vivere nelle circostanze più adatte alla loro condizione; che coloro che sono esauriti e sovraccarichi di lavoro siano collocati in ambienti curativi, dove possano ricevere tutte le assistenze di cui disponevano i ricchi borghesi malati; che nessuno sia più costantemente tormentato dal timore di tempi difficili.

Our ultimate aim is to bring about the existence of a state of society in which all persons who for one reason or another have lost the capacity for work, all those who are unable to work, shall have assured support. We must ensure that old people shall enjoy a peaceful old age in which they will be provided with all the comforts of life; that children shall have everything suitable to their require­ments; that invalids and cripples shall be able to live in the circumstances most appropriate to their condition; that those who are wearied and overworked shall be placed in curative surroundings, where they will receive all the care that used to be given to the wealthy bourgeois who were ailing; that no one shall any longer be perpetually harassed with anticipations of hard times.
